Okay, first off, some background information. In Soul Eater world, there are weapons and there are meisters. Both are human. Weapons, well... turn into weapons. Meisters use Weapons and fight with soul wavelengths, which is basically just another Vague Mystical Anime Life-force Power. When they kill someone, the soul manifests as a little orb that some Weapons like to eat, others just... absorb somehow. Lord Death (yes, literally the Grim Reaper/personification of death itself) has an academy devoted to training Weapons and Meisters to fight and collect Kishins and Kishin eggs (evil souls that aren't Kishin-level evil yet), which are basically what someone turns into when they eat a bunch of human souls. It is called the Death Weapon and Meister Academy, located in Death City, Nevada. So, eating normal human souls is a no-no, but eating the souls of people who have eaten human souls is okay. Oh, and when a Weapon and Meister pair collects enough evil souls, as well as the soul of an animal-themed magical creature they call a witch, the weapon becomes a Death Scythe, one of Lord Death's personal weapons. Yay!
Presumably in his early teens, Spirit enrolled in the DWMA as a Weapon. There he was partnered with Franken Stein, a Meister who turned out to be really kind of a creepster who experimented on Spirit while he slept. After 5 years (best not to ask how he didn't notice for five years), Spirit's girlfriend noticed strange scars over his body and Spirit, understandably, freaked the hell out. He then left Stein to partner with his girlfriend, a woman who earned him the title of Death Scythe. Spirit married her, fathered a child with her, and then 15 years later she left him because he was--and still is--a ladies' man.
Canon starts here. Spirit's Unnamed Wife has gone on some kind of crazy world tour, and Spirit himself has joined the DWMA's faculty as Death'smain man Death Scythe to watch over their daughter, Maka, who is his pride and joy. Maka, meanwhile, hates her father for cheating on her mother. At the DWMA Spirit mostly derps around doing teacher/faculty-ish things, visiting the local Hostess Club, and sending Maka good grade vibes.
One day she goes off on some mission and runs into an androgynous kid named Crona who has some kind of crazy evil Weapon dude melted down and injected into his blood. Don't ask. They have an epic battle, and Maka gets her ass handed to her, so Stein and Spirit show up to save the day. They beat the stuffing out of Crona, only to find that he is being controlled by a witch. Said witch is obscenely powerful and immediately buggers off with Crona, so all the Meisters and Weapons go home.
Shortly after, Death hosts an Anniversary Ball.
Then everything starts to go crazy-go-nuts because the school nurse turns out to be actually that witch from earlier in disguise, and she and her posse of Crona, a frog witch, a bunch of mice witches, and an immortal magic werewolf (again, don't ask) run off to wake up a Kishin that has apparently been imprisoned underneath Death City for 800 years. Oh, and they lock the place where the Ball was held in a pocket dimension so none of the Weapons and Meisters can get out and stop them. SURPRISE~!
Fortunately, the three main student characters (Death's son Death the Kid, a ninja/assassin named Black*Star, and Maka) and their weapons (Liz and Patti Thompson, Tsubaki, and Soul) manage to escape before the pocket dimension closes. Also Stein. Spirit, meanwhile, being a skirt-chaser, well... chases skirt. The nurse's skirt, to be precise. The nurse who is also a witch named Medusa. The moral of the story is womanizing saves the day!
So while the kids go after the frog witch and the werewolf and Crona, Stein and Spirit team up once again to fight Medusa, showing off their mad combat skills. Medusa proceeds to be a creeper and tries to lure Stein to her side because he's also a creeper, but Spirit is like OH HELL NO and keeps Stein in check via the power of Bromance. Long story short, the kids epic fail and the Kishin wakes up, but Stein and Spirit manage to beat Medusa.
Since the Kishin escaping is pretty much the worst news ever, Death calls up all of his other Death Scythes from other countries. Only three out of six show up. PRODUCTIVITY. Now, the next events are triggered by the fact that the Kishin sort of... bleeds madness everywhere. It makes people and things go insane all over the world, and it basically just brings out all the crazies. Among said crazies is Medusa's older sister Arachne, who has a vendetta against Death for some battle that happened 800 years ago. She apparently has a cult following called Arachnophobia, with whom the DWMA promptly goes to war.
Also, Stein goes more crazy and is partnered with a Death Scythe named Marie Mjolnir, whose soul wavelength calms him a bit. He also remains under Spirit's watchful eye, who is officially the most long-suffering and patient friend ever.
This continues for a while with Spirit watching from the DWMA because he's supposed to stay with Lord Death as his personal weapon, since Spirit is the only Deathscythe who is actually a scythe. Then the witch Medusa shows up again, now possessing the body of a young girl named Rachel. She surrenders and claims to have a bargain to strike with Death. Spirit is placed in charge of interrogating/torturing her (though that ends up not being a possibility, since harming her would harm Rachel as well) and bringing her to Death himself to discuss said bargain. Spirit oversees the meeting, in which Medusa promises to give up the location of Arachnophobia's headquarters in exchange for an oath that nobody from the DWMA may harm her. Death accepts, and Spirit escorts her from the premises of the school.
After that, Spirit is given the duty of announcing the plans to attack Arachnophobia and giving orders from the DWMA during the battle itself. Then through a chain of increasingly ridiculous and odd plot devices, Death City turns into a giant mecha, and Death walks it over to Arachnophobia and coffee-table-flips the building. I AM NOT EVEN JOKING.
Then the Kishin appears and has an epic battle with Death and Spirit. Everything goes pretty well until said Kishin tries to attack Death's son, prompting Death to fling himself in the way and ultimately getting himself and Spirit pretty busted up... after which the Kishin runs away and makes himself a pocket dimension to heal. Fortunately, Maka, Black*Star, and Death the Kid again manage to squeeze in before the dimension closes up. They then have YET ANOTHER EPIC BATTLE, ending with Maka beating the Kishin via a totally awesome punch to the face. Spirit is the Happiest Papa Ever and goes off to have a smoke with Stein, who is now no longer crazy.
Character Personality: As a Death Scythe, Spirit is shown to be hard-working, dependable, and intelligent--it says something that Death trusts him with interrogations and relaying orders on a regular basis. At his best he is a guy with a big heart and a strong sense of duty and stronger protective instincts.
As a person, Spirit is kinda a loser.
When interacting with his daughter he very rarely expresses himself in any kind of appropriate way. He usually acts flamboyant and emotional, bursting into tears or exaggerated screams at a moment's notice, and he often speaks in third person when being silly or trying to impress Maka. He spends hours gushing about how adorable Maka is, much to her annoyance. He has extensive and overanalytical internal monologues, most often about trying to look cool in front of her, only to fail at being impressive. He even vomits from happiness when Maka grudgingly asks him to hang out with her. None of these things are very characteristic of a responsible father. Spirit does have his moments, the occasional comforting remark or serious explanation, but he can also switch from serious to silly (and back) in practically no time at all. Perhaps most perplexing is that despite his extravagantly professed love for Maka and her mother, he shows no signs of quitting his womanizing habits. He is a ladies' man and can be seen on many, MANY occasions flirting with women, particularly at a hostess club called Chupa Cabra. (Incidentally, the fact that he has no known children out of wedlock and visits a hostess club rather than a stripper club leads this mun to believe that he is more interested than flirting than sex.)
The key to this apparent contradiction is that above all, Spirit is a man who lives in the present. He does not angst or worry about the past, he merely carries on, possessing a very accepting nature, for better or for worse. He accepts that he is a womanizer and loves Maka and her mother, and whenever someone questions him about it he tends to go blank and try to escape the conversation as quickly as possible. He also accepts Stein's personality as a creeper before even Stein does, despite hardly approving, having been vivisected in his sleep for five years.
Furthermore, Spirit is loyal, pig-headedly so, at least in (ahaha) spirit. His wife leaves him, yet he never once complains about her or appears to be the least bit bitter. On the contrary, he praises her and declares his unending love for her and Maka every chance he gets, if only in his mind, and he has a tendency to burst into wailing sobs when someone mentions his wife or Maka's violent dislike of him. Maka flat out calls him disgusting and shuns every attempt he makes to be close to her, but he remains as proud and loving of her as ever, even spending three days straight sending her "positive energy" in the form of ridiculous hand gestures and chanting "MakaMakaMakaMakaMaka" without a single thank you.
Spirit even shows a remarkable loyalty to his old partner, Stein. Despite the five years Stein spent vivisecting at night and Spirit's obvious and understandable horror, he still unflinchingly partners with his old meister on two occasions and is always there keeping Stein's insanity in check. He calls Stein a "heartless backwards freak" and criticizes his "fake smile," but he still watches over Stein like an older brother, to the point that in one of Stein's hallucinations Spirit takes the form of a guard dog keeping him away from madness. When Stein ultimately wanders off in the throes of insanity, and Marie Mjolnir insists on going after him, Spirit very obviously disapproves, saying "maybe Stein is stronger than you think."
Overall, Spirit is a guy whose life revolves around other people, and he pays little attention to himself. His suit is shabby, his posture crooked, and his expression more often than not looks tired. He throws himself completely into everything he does, and as a consequence often doesn't see what he's getting himself into until it's too late. Basically, he's a six-foot red-haired dog.
Character Abilities: He can turn into a scythe and be used for... scythe-y things.
ALSO, Spirit has the ability to feel and channel the soul wavelength/life force of whoever is wielding said scythe. And he’s good at it. Basically, in Soul Eater world, the relationship between a weapon and a meister (person who wields said weapon) is similar to that of a guitar and an amp. By itself, an electric guitar makes a soft tinny sound, but when plugged into an amp it makes a loud sound. Well, if the average weapon and meister pair are a guitar and a regular garage amp, Spirit would be a fancy expensive amp with a sound board attached. In other words, he's really good at amplifying, focusing and refining the power (soul wavelength) of his meister.
Character Inventory: His suit and a half-burned cigarette in his pocket.

Spirit Albarn was a realist.
Reality was just that--real. It could not be changed or fixed with wishing and dreaming and crying. He'd seen people try. Hell, he wanted to try himself. But wishing would not make Stein understand deeper emotions and make him any less of the creepy bastard he was. Dreaming would not make Maka forgive him for years of womanizing and broken promises. And crying would not bring back his wife or erase his crimes against her.
Of course... just because he was a realist didn't mean he didn't indulge in those things on more than one occasion. He merely knew they wouldn't do any good. Spirit was a realist, after all, not a cynic.
And reality was by no means a harsh master, not completely. There was the reality that Maka would defeat the Kishin, for instance. His darling daughter saved the world from eternal madness because the fact was that she was strong, stronger than anyone truly expected or hoped. Spirit smiled when he thought of that, of his daughter standing triumphant as the Kishin's madness disappated. She got that trait from her mother... not him. Definitely not him. No, Maka (thankfully) had much more of her mother's qualities than Spirit's.
His Maka. His little girl who, really... wasn't so little anymore. He couldn't be more proud... and with any luck she would see how proud he was, some day. Until then he'd work on scraping off the dirt and scum that was his life, looking always to the future and never staying in the past for too long.
A lighter clicked softly, and Spirit glanced over at Stein, who was lighting his second cigarette.
"Bastard," Spirit said flatly, stamping out his own used cigarette on the nearby balcony. "You're gonna get lung cancer." Stein shrugged, and Spirit honestly didn't expect anything different.
Franken Stein was a freak. He was a backwards psychopath with little to no grasp of human emotion. Five years of experimenting on your roommate does not a normal child make. He was creepy and wrong. And frankly, pretty stupid for a genius prodigy like him. That was fact, something Spirit never forgot and never tried to sugar-coat or hug or talk out of existing. None of that would change who Stein was, so why bother?
Spirit Albarn was a realist. He was who he was, things were what they were, and everything was as it should be, even womanizers and daughters who scorned their fathers and heartless madmen.
And well... that was alright.
